Train journey to Salzburg by day train

The journey starts in Denmark, where you travel by train south to Salzburg – birthplace of Mozart and one of the most beautiful cultural cities in Austria. The train journey takes you through northern and southern Germany before arriving in the Alpine region.

There are 3 nights in Salzburg. Salzburg is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and is widely known as the city of music. This is where Mozart lived and worked, and the epic musical film The Sound of Music was also filmed in Salzburg and the surrounding areas. “The hills are alive” truly fits Salzburg.

In the house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born, there is a museum dedicated to the composer. It displays musical instruments from his time, along with papers, letters and stories from his early life.

The old town of Salzburg, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best-preserved historic centres in Europe. It is characterised by beautiful baroque and medieval buildings, cobblestone streets and lively squares.

The most famous attraction is Hohensalzburg Fortress, an impressive castle and one of the largest fully preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. From the fortress, located on a hill above Salzburg, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the city and surrounding mountains. A guided visit is recommended, and the site includes museums, a restaurant and a pleasant courtyard garden.

Throughout the year, Salzburg hosts concerts, opera performances and classical music events.

St. Peter’s Abbey & Cemetery is an ancient monastic site where both famous and unknown people are buried. The cemetery is beautifully maintained and is known as the hiding place of the von Trapp family in The Sound of Music.

The Mirabell Gardens, with its manicured flower beds, fountains and sculptures, are also featured in the film.

A visit to Hellbrunn Palace & Trick Fountains is highly recommended. The palace is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers playful and unexpected water features, making it an enjoyable experience for both adults and children.

For local specialities, the famous dish Salzburger Nockerl is highly recommended. The three peaks of the dessert symbolise the three mountains surrounding Salzburg, and it is served as a sweet soufflé-style dessert.

Day 4: Salzburg – Denmark

On the final day of your journey, you travel from Salzburg back to Denmark by train. After a few days filled with culture, music and nature experiences, you can sit back and enjoy a comfortable journey north.
