West Highland Line – “Harry Potter railway”
The world-famous West Highland Line is the crown jewel among Scotland’s railways. From Glasgow, the train gradually moves into the Highlands, where the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. The highlight is the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, where the train elegantly glides 30 metres above the valley with views of Loch Shiel and the historic Glenfinnan Monument. Through the majestic Glen Coe valley, known as the “tear canal of the Highlands”, the journey continues to Fort William at the foot of Great Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. The final stretch to the fishing town of Mallaig offers breathtaking views over the Small Isles and Isle of Skye.
From Edinburgh, the journey heads north through Perthshire, known as “Scotland’s garden”. Here you encounter a different Scotland: gentle hills, ancient oak woodland and traditional Highland villages such as charming Pitlochry. The train continues through Cairngorms National Park, Great Britain’s largest national park, where the alpine landscape is home to rare animals and some of the country’s oldest pine forests. In the Speyside region, you pass the world’s highest concentration of whisky distilleries, before the journey ends in Inverness, the “capital of the Highlands”.
From Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh, you experience one of Europe’s most scenic coastal stretches. The train follows fjords and sea inlets, through remote valleys and past isolated Highland villages. What makes this route special is the contrast between the gentler landscape of the east coast and the rugged beauty of the west coast. The journey culminates with the magnificent view over Isle of Skye and its dramatic Cuillin Mountains.

From May to October, you can experience the original steam train route on the West Highland Line. This vintage train, known from the Harry Potter films, gives you an authentic travel experience through the Highlands.
